Lifting Q&A
25 April 2008
How long have you been in the industry?
For 28 years
What has been the most significant development in your time?
The self propelled modular transporter (SPMT) from the early 1980s. Not so much the propulsion system as the steering characteristics and transportability of these trailers have raised the production capacity with axle lines to new levels
What is your favourite crane ever?
The Demag AC 1600. It is a very efficient and roadable machine, easy to rig and derig and perfect to handle any load in its capacity
Is the crane industry safe?
The industry in general is safe but, unfortunately, some companies neglect safety rules in an effort to gain economic advantage. These companies, though few in number, have a large impact on the image of the industry as a whole
What disappoints you most in the industry?
A lot of companies base their investment decisions on the pressure exerted on them by finance companies and banks rather than their own professional expertise. Size does not always mean quality, which is the only means of long-term survival
Where do you see the industry in 20 years?
There will probably be consolidation among mid-size companies and eventually a small number of global players will remain together with a large number of local (regional) companies
