Buildings at the North Middlesex University Hospital are being brought down while treatment for patients continues on the site

General Demolition is bringing down almost half the buildings at the North Middlesex University Hospital in Edmonton, north London, in a phased demolition to minimise disruption to the hospital’s normal functions.

Working on behalf of main contractor Bouygues UK, the company is carrying out asbestos removal, all necessary soft strip, and the demolition of two elevated reinforced concrete ramps and a number of Edwardian buildings - a three storey medical block, a two storey accommodation block and two single-storey buildings to provide an open site area. The project includes the implementation of a site waste management plan to maximise recycling of the demolition waste on the site – to date more than 200,000 bricks have been recovered for reuse.

Once the demolition is complete, a new £118 million (US$234 million) building will be constructed that will provide an emergency care centre, an acute and critical care centre and a diagnostic and treatment centre, along with a new Energy Centre, all of which are expected to be open by 2010.
