New 200 tonne and 1000 tonne cranes are under development at Liebherr-Werk Ehingen in Germany. Due for launch in 2006 will be a crawler crane in the 1000 tonne capacity class. The model designation was not finalised at the time of writing and no further details were available.

Towards the end of 2005 will see the launch of the LTM 1200-5.1, a 200 tonne capacity wheeled mobile on five axles with a seven-section 72 m boom. The preliminary load chart indicates that the 200 tonne capacity will be over the rear of the crane at 3 m radius on a 13.2 m boom length: maximum 360 degree lifting capacity is 143 tonnes on the 13.2 m boom. Maximum capacity on 72 m of boom is 9.4 tonnes at 14 m radius.

The crane will have an operating weight of 60 tonnes and the carrier engine is a 370 kW Step 3/Tier 3 Liebherr diesel. The crane's main travel dimensions are 15.3 m (L) by 4.0 m (H) by 3.0 m (W).

Manitowoc dealer in Brazil, Geomax Equipamentos, has delivered a 250 tonne (275 US ton) Model 999 crawler crane to Locar, Latin America's largest crane-owning company. This Model 999 has 67 m (220 ft) of main boom, 73 m (240 ft) of 149 luffing jib, and 15 m (50 ft) of fixed jib. Its first task was to place a 109.5 tonne (120 ton) oven at a paper and pulp plant

Cranes lift the old as well as the new. A 650 tonne capacity Demag AC 650 recently removed two architecturally significant pieces from the excavation site for a new building in Venlo, the Netherlands. The items were two unanticipated, but welcomed, at least by city officials, pieces of 13th Century foundation weighing 75 tonnes. The rig that reclaimed these included a 12-axle line Goldhofer type THP/L pulled by a 530 hp Scania tractor.
