Austrian construction firm Strabag has been awarded a contract valued at approximately €111 million to build a new stretch of motorway in Romania.

The new road, commissioned by Romania’s National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration (CNAIR), will link the city of Oradea, in Transylvania, with the existing A3 motorway.

With a construction due to start in March 2022, Strabag will build a dual carriageway, plus 12 buildings along the route, as well as numerous connections between the new motorway and existing country and state roads.

Thomas Birtel, CEO of Strabag, said, “Oradea is the economic and cultural centre of western Romania. The motorway connection will better link the rapidly growing city to the primary road network and so contribute to further growth.”

The project has been given a total construction time of 24 months.

Strabag is also currently working on a section of the A3 motorway from Ungheni to Târgu Mureș, having successfully completed a section between Ungheni and Ogra in 2018.
