17 February 2014
Transnet Port Terminals in South Africa has taken delivery of four Liebherr ship to shore (STS) cranes and 18 rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes.
The cranes are being delivered by Liebherr Container Cranes in Ireland. The STS cranes will have an outreach of 65 metres, a span of 30.48 m, and a back reach of 19 m. They will be 41 m tall and capacity will be 65 tonnes when configured with a twin lift spreader. The cranes are capable of handling container vessels of up to 24 rows across, a company spokesperson added.
The RTGs can span seven containers and a truck lane and can stack up to 5 containers high, the manufacturer said. The RTGs will be delivered to Ngqura port. They will be fitted with auto steering, container location recognition systems and ultrasonic RTG to RTG anti-collision systems, a company spokesperson added.
Over the past two years Transnet has taken delivery of nine mobile harbour cranes, bringing the total up to 13. In 2012 Liebherr Container Cranes also delivered two ship-to-shore container cranes to Ngqura Container Terminal, bringing the total number of Liebherr ship to shore cranes operated by Transnet Port Terminals to 31, a company spokesperson said.
