The 3,200 tonne capacity Terex CC 8800-1 Twin prepares to lift the AGR absorber column at a petrochemical development in Qatar

Al Jaber Heavy Lift and Transport, based in the Middle East, has used a 3,200 tonne capacity Terex CC 8800-1 Twin to carry out lifts at a petrochemical development in Qatar.

Al Jaber carried out a total of 31 lifts using the 1,600 tonne capacity Terex CC 8800-1 crane and a further two lifts using the CC 8800-1 in twin configuration. The CC 8800-1 Twin was used to install two advanced gas reactor (AGR) absorbers that weighed 1,300 tonnes.

The lifts were planned over a period of 18 months by Sevi Phillip, Al Jaber site manager. The columns were moved to position using self-propelled modular trailers (SPMT’s) before being raised from a horizontal position to vertical using the CC 8800-1 Twin crane. A tail frame was used to control the base of the absorber.

Once the SPMT had been moved, the CC 8800-1 slewed through 90 degrees and placed the column into its final position. The crane was then used to lift and install the second AGR absorber at the second location on site.

Mark Rowlands, Al Jaber Heavy Lift project manager, said, “The Terex CC 8800-1 Twin is not just the best crane for the job, but the best crane. It was comfortable, easy to use, stable and flexible and the operators were very happy with its precise and user friendly controls.

“We were all very pleased with the crane and how it performed. Everything went according to the plan - it was a dream come true,” Phillip added. “We were all surprised how compact the CC 8800-1 Twin was given its huge lift capacity. There were 27,000 people on site so space was at a premium. We worked with the client to minimize time and space requirements which really benefitted the whole project.”

The AGR absorber column will be used to help remove hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide and organic sulphurs.
