Airway lifting from Comansa
21 October 2011
Three Linden Comansa 5 LC 5010 flat top tower cranes are providing lifting work at the El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia, Latin America's busiest cargo airport.
Configured with 50 m jibs, the cranes have maximum load capacities of 4 and 5 tonnes. They are placing reinforced concrete, as well as lifting general construction materials. One of the units has also been used with a mobile crane to lift metallic main girders, each weighing 7 tonnes.
As well as being Colombia's main airport, El Dorado is also Latin America's third busiest for passenger traffic. In 2010, almost 19 million people used the airport, and now the facilities are getting too small to absorb the volume. As a result Opain SA was commissioned to carry out the work to practically rebuild the airport and manage its operations until 2027.
The Comansa cranes are working on Terminal 2, and were supplied by Gigacon, Linden Comansa's official dealer in Colombia. Gigacon has been involved in construction and lifting for more than 35 years, and is one of the biggest crane rental companies in the country.
Following the construction of Terminal 2, the airport's departure building will be demolished and the construction of Terminal 1 will begin. Once complete in 2014, the US$5.5 billion rebuild will provide capacity for 28 million passengers a year.
