GAP Group in the UK has been awarded a two-year sole supplier contract worth £2 million by City Building (Glasgow).

The deal, signed on January 4, will see Glasgow-based GAP provide tools, skips, access equipment and accommodation to City Building over a two-year period, with an option to extend up to four years. City Building is one of Scotland's largest construction companies, with an annual turnover of almost £200 million.

"We are very pleased that City Building has given us this opportunity; particularly because the sole supplier status shows that we are trusted to meet each and every one of their hire requirements, due to our continuous commitment and strong work ethos, and we are confident we will not let them down," said Douglas Anderson, joint managing director of GAP.

The contract could not be timelier as Glasgow is undergoing a construction boost as the city prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

A new National Indoor Sport Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome are being constructed in the East End of the city, while an Athletes Village, housing 6000 athletes and officials, will form the centrepiece of a £1.6 billion inner city regeneration project.

In total, over £2 billion will be spent on enhancements to the city, and City Building is already enjoying part of the action. The construction company has been charged with refurbishing Glasgow's famous Tontine Building, which will be used as the base for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
