Güiria port to provide heavy lift facilities

The port of Güiria, in Venezuela, has taken delivery of a new Mammoet MTC-15 terminal crane to help deliver modules and materials into Güiria for a new power station.

The new power plant is 20 km away from the port of Güiria and is being built by the Venezuelan National Oil Company. Prior to the arrival of the MTC-15, the nearest heavy lift facilities were at the port of Trinidad.

The MTC-15 has a capacity of 600 tonnes at a 25 metre radius. Water or sand can be used for ballast. The terminal crane can be assembled with an 80 tonne crane within 10 days and can be transported in 25 standard 20 foot containers, a company spokesperson said.

For the construction of the plant, international heavy lift and transport company Mammoet has been sub-contracted to transport 40,000 freight tonnes of cargo. The cargo will consist of four turbines, four generators and general cargo. The main contractor for the project is Elecnor.

The first of the two turbines and generators have arrived in Venezuela, having been shipped from ports in Europe and Charleston and Houston in the USA on the vessel MV Jetstream. From the port the cargo will be loaded onto trailers and transported to the building site.
