Kier has been given preferred bidder status for a £115 million (€133 million) redevelopment of one of the UK’s most important high-security mental health hospitals, Broadmoor.

The West London Mental Health Trust has chosen Kier for the project at the hospital in Crowthorne, Berkshire. It will involve the construction of a new hospital containing 162 mental health beds, and it is said that it will transport the 150-year-old hospital into the 21st century, “providing a modern, fit-for-purpose environment for services”.

Located on the Broadmoor estate, the new buildings will allow staff to provide the latest mental healthcare treatments, which up to now have proved difficult and costly because of the current 19th century layout.

Designed to modern environmental standards, the new hospital will be much more energy efficient and cost efficient to run.

Managing director of Kier Construction’s major projects business, Colin Lamb, said, “Kier has a proven track record of delivering highly complex projects, creating facilities for the health sector in collaborative partnerships.

“We look forward to working very closely with the Trust to deliver this landmark facility which will provide first-class care for patients in the area for many years to come.”

Work on the hospital is expected to start late in 2013, and phase one will be ready to accept patients by January 2017.
