Mammoet completes petrochemical job

Heavy lift and transportation specialist Mammoet completed the demolition and replacement of five heater furnaces in what it described as a “congested” 86-year-old petrochemical plant in Texas City, Texas, USA.

According to Mammoet, the dimensional constraints in the refinery made crane construction challenging as there was no space to lay down the booms and jibs to assemble the two CC 8800 lattice boom crawler cranes it needed to use for the job.

Mammoet’s solution was to assemble the two CC 8800s in the air, using two other cranes to lift the jibs and booms. This, Mammoet said, enabled it to salvage and install larger sections of the furnaces, cutting the project’s duration by more than a month.

Once assembled the two CC 8800s were on the site for several months and carried out more than 50 critical lifts.
