Skanska to help build ‘world’s longest and deepest subsea road tunnel’

Skanska has signed a contract with the Norwegian Road Authority to build part of a major subsea road tunnel in Rogaland County in Norway.

The twin tube, 10.5m diameter tunnel will be the world’s longest and deepest subsea road tunnel, with a length of 26.7km and a maximum depth of 392m below sea level. The tunnel will replace the ferry that is currently being used to cross the fjord and link the Randaberg and Bokn municipalities.
The project is divided into segments and Skanska is responsible for the build of the E04 Boknafjord tunnel North. This is one of three key tunnelling projects comprising 18.5km of road in the tunnel and 2km of the road above ground.
The value of the contract is approximately NOK5bn (£415M), while the total cost of the project is NOK22bn (£1.8bn). Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2023 and is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2029.
