Hareket lifts at Duqm
28 May 2020
Installing nine bullet tanks was the latest task completed by Turkish heavy lift and transport specialist Hareket at the Duqm Refinery on the west coast of the Sultanate of Oman.
The refinery is 600 km south of Muscat and part of the US$15 billion Duqm Special Economic Zone development focused on petrochemicals and infrastructure over the next 15 years. It is a 1,745 square kilometre area occupying 70 km of coastline bordering the Arabian Sea.
Hareket is the heavy lift contractor for the Petrofac International Limited and Samsung Engineering Co Limited joint venture company in the EPC 2 Area. The project was to lift and place nine LPG (liquid petroleum gas) bullet tanks, each forming a load weighing around 900 tonnes (810 tonnes for the bare vessel without rigging). Dimensions of each tank were 72 metres long and 8 metres in diameter.
Hareket had the responsibility to engineer, execute and supervise these critical lifts. The operation was safely carried out and was finished in time. Petrofac Samsung Engineering JV. mechanical superintendent Heeseok Woo commented, “We appreciate Hareket’s professional team in executing the works safely and in time.”
They were tandem-lifted using a pair of large lattice boom crawler cranes. A 1,600 tonne capacity Demag CC 8800-1 was used on one end in 66 metre SSL superlift configuration with 550 tonnes of superlift counterweight. Its smaller sibling, the 1,250 tonne capacity Demag CC 6800-1, was used on the other end, in 54 metre SSL superlift configuration with 450 tonnes of superlift ballast.
